In my experience Linux (slackware) is completely stable and reliable.
My Linux box has never crashed (in almost 2 years).
I never have to say Alt-Ctrl-Del to Linux,
as I quite often do to DOS,
since the virtual consoles allow me to go to another window
and kill anything nasty.
Linux compares very favourably too
with Mips and Sun workstations, which I use regularly.
I've often wished that Linux was the standard platform for unixTeX.
I've certainly had fewer problems compiling the unixTeX programs
under Linux than on the workstations.
